Cal Poly students reject University Union expansion

Cal Poly students sent a clear message this week that they don’t want to pay an additional $597 per year in fees to expand and remodel the University Union. In a two-day vote held Wednesday and Thursday through the university’s online portal, 58 percent of participating students cast a “no” vote on the estimated $180 million project. http://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/local/education/article62836927.html Time for a short screed... [-( Good for the students in rejecting a $600 increase in student fees, at a public university. You attend Cal Poly for a high quality, affordable education, not to hang out in the new $180 million dollar student union. $180 Million? That's insane. This year, UF completed it's extensive remodel of the Reitz student union, which was built around the same time as Cal Poly's (1969 vs 1967), and UF spent only $70 million (and paid for it with current student fees). This is a campus with 52,000 students, not 20,000 like Cal Poly. Whomever came up with a $180 million dollar plan was completely out of control. By the way, note in the above story that the new fees were not schedule to start until 2020, after most of the current students would have graduated. The current students voted against raising the fees on future students, good for them. I'm fine with students wanting to raise their current fees a bit for new facilities, sports, whatever, but this was ridiculous.
