First post here, so, hi, and I hope you can help!
My DD is a HS freshman who is doing well -- in the top two of her class of 65-70, with an average of 97 or 98, depending on the day, and she's taking the most rigorous courses offered to her. She is aiming for either Salutatorian or Valedictorian.
Our school's grading scale is 4.0 for 90 or above, and it is NOT academically rigorous. It offers only two years of Spanish (the only foreign language), and the few AP/Dual Enrollment classes (English Lit, US History, Pre-calculus, biology) are locked out for anyone below a junior. Sometimes those classes don't even "make" because they don't have enough students enrolling.
This is the ONLY school in our county, and moving her or us is NOT an option. We can't afford private school or the tuition for a public school in another county, and in any event it would be near impossible to get her back and forth to another school.
When we plug in her numbers and class rank, along with guesstimates of her PSAT/SAT (she hasn't taken either) at the 75th percentile, selective colleges look possible. But will they put her in the automatic "no" pile because of her school? And even if she did get into a more selective college, would she be academically prepared?
