Hi, I just recently graduated high school and am about to move out to start college this coming fall. I'm going to college so I can earn my business degree. The college that I have accepted is Virginia Commonwealth University. However, I did not accept their invitation on my own accord. My parents are forcing me to go. Originally, I wanted to go to George Mason University, but after being weight-listed, I was ultimately rejected. I only applied to VCU as a safety and easily got in, but I never wanted to go there anyway. The quality of their business school is nowhere near George Mason's (or UMD's which is another school I applied to but got rejected from). I wanted to go to GMU to expand my understanding of business and grow up to be a successful businessman or financial investor. I thought to myself that I'd rather do a potential 1 year or more likely 2 year transfer from Northern Virginia Community College to GMU but my parents refuse to let me go to a school they view as "disgraceful". My parents are also in a lot of debt and are currently suffering from financial troubles and I thought that might urge them to let me go to NOVA so they could save some money for when I transfer to GMU but they still refuse to let me go.
The only reason my parents want me to go to VCU is because it's far away. Not because they don't love me or anything; I have very loving parents whom I share a lot of my time with. They want me to go far away (from where I live about a 3 hour drive away) because they believe it will help me to become more mature and adult like. I don't disagree with them on that fact, however, I feel like going to VCU for business will only be a trouble for my parent's finances and a hinder on my own development into a businessman.
In my community, there is negative stigma towards students who go to NOVA. People tend to treat people who go to NOVA as "dumber" than other people there age. I completely disagree with that statement. I know plenty of people who went to NOVA and have become quite successful. I don't plan on staying there four years either. I only plan on using NOVA as a cheaper and safer (safer because of its guaranteed transfer program) way to get to GMU, my optimal business school.
My parents ultimately gave me three choices.
1: Go to VCU like a good little boy and my parents will cover the tuition and other costs
2: Go to NOVA and get kicked out of the house and pay for my own tuition/living expenses (no dorms at NOVA)
3: Don't go to college at all, get kicked out, and find a job for myself (probably not going to choose this :P)
My parents say that ^^THIS^^ isn't "forcing" me to go to VCU, but I think that it's close enough to be considered a bribe/blackmail.
I don't think I could get a part time job that pays enough to make a living in Northern Virginia, and I also want to focus on my studies instead of having to juggle two different and important responsibilities at the same time. But I really don't want to go to VCU and I really just want to transfer from NOVA and go to GMU.
Is there anyway to convince my parents into letting me go to NOVA and then transfer to GMU? Please don't say "just go to VCU for two years then transfer" for two reasons. One: my parents want me to go to VCU for all 4 years. Two: if I'm going to go to VCU for two years and then transfer I think it makes more sense to just do that with NOVA because it would save my family money (~11,000 compared to ~4,000 a year).
PLEASE any help would be really appreciated! I'm extremely stressed out and really just want them to understand that this is what I want and think is right for me!
