What admissions trends trigger the cynic in you? I have three

Mine are, 1. Why does every 16- and 17-year-olds have a start-up or small business these days? The other day a high school student was in the paper (wearing a Stanford hat) discussing his "company" and how he had to travel to China last summer and visit a factory. It sounded 1000% exaggerated. Tiger parents get wind that college want entrepreneurs and wham--every kid is "developing" products? 2. Learning Mandarin—bonus points if done outside of school—is definitely trendy among those gunning for elite colleges. 3. Wealthy teens getting "normal" crummy summer jobs, ex.
