What do you do with them until they leave?!Those who have kids with late September starts/Trimesters

S is leaving for school at the end of next week! All his friends are away, the closest school he could visit is about 3 hours and he hates driving, plus most of his good friends are freshman and I cannot imagine visiting them is a good idea one week into the school year. Am I wrong on that? We are flying to his school so shopping is not an option (I know about the shopping here, pickup there0) everything has been or will be ordered, all his paperwork is done including his placement tests. Meanwhile his sister is taking the ACTs this weekend and he is doing nothing but annoying her! I know this is related to nerves as this will be a completely different experience than anything before (he went to a really small high school without any diversity) that he has no outlet for and is just part of the transition. He is not the kid that will take up cooking or grocery shopping for the family (I wish). This year is relatively early, next year it will be a week later and we live in a different geographic area than the school so may not have many local friends. What do kids whose friends are away do when they are on trimesters? Do they continue with summer internships? Volunteer? Travel with classmates? Visit friends at other colleges?
