I utilized this forum when my daughter (rising college Junior) was applying to schools and received some great advice, so am hoping for a repeat as I try to assist my son who is a rising high school Junior. He is a solid (but not super) student who currently has approximately an unweighted 3.6-3.7 GPA. He took the ACT last month so that we could narrow down which test he might focus on, as the SAT is more popular here in New England. His composite score was a 33. So here are my questions:
Given his GPA and this test score how do I best determine a strategy for selecting schools that he will be accepted to, especially since we will require merit monies. Does it make sense for him to do some prep and retake the ACT or can he consider himself done? A quick look at stats for admitted students at various schools puts his ACT score on the higher end while his GPA seems low. Should we focus more on the schools where his GPA looks like a match even if the ACT score is higher?
He attends a large urban high school, and the guidance staff, though lovely people, are really much more focused on getting kids to graduate. They will likely have little to offer in the way of advice.
He is just now starting to think about the "big or small", and "rural or urban" questions. He does not yet have a major in mind but to date has expressed interest in economics, philosophy, geography and sciences. No earth shattering EC's- will soon be an Eagle Scout, is involved in Model UN, Model Congress and another Youth in Government program and has a part time job.
He is beginning to express interest in the whole idea of college (actually asked if he could skip the rest of high school :)and wants to start putting together some ideas of potential schools of interest to visit. Any advice?
