Are College Planning Advisors worth it?

I want to go to a top of the line university, I am wondering if hiring a person for help with applications would be worth it. I am very informed in the application process and I'm not convinced that these college planners help for well known public universities. If you have any first hand experience please leave advice, thanks!

Submitting a Research Paper - does it help College Admissions?

I am submitting a research paper for the American Statistical Association's student paper competition. Is this, and submiting research papers in general, a good way to show colleges your interest in the subject and show off your "spike" in the field?

Gap Year at Sea

Hi, everyone. Looking for any info or experience that you might have with programs like Gap Year at Sea (pros, cons, etc). Considering this option for my HS junior; he would still apply to colleges as a senior and then take the gap year between HS graduation and freshman year of college. Looking for a program to help him gain more independence, life experience, maturity, and, I guess, "people" skills. He's not an experienced sailor, but loves the sea and is a hard worker. Thanks in advance.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/12/17/review-panel-praises-dartmouth-campus-culture-reforms.html The changes include a ban on hard liquor, the development of a mandatory four-year sexual violence prevention curriculum and the creation of new residential communities. wonder what the creation of new residential communities is about and how it ties into "culture reforms".

PSAT Scoring

So our D got her scores back and we thought based on scores she'd be commended. My husband was looking through her math errors this morning and found one marked wrong with 2 entry's as wrong answer. One was the correct answer. Probably a case of something not completely erased but not sure. He thought we should call and see if they could pull the test and look at the answer. It could be the difference between being a finalist or commended. Has this happened to anyone else and if so what was the outcome?

Getting college decisions this time of year is like some sort of bizarro Grinch version of Christmas

Seriously. And another thing I was thinking about this morning...remember how you go through labor with your first child & all you can remember later is BABY but then you go into the delivery room for the next one and you're like shoot I forgot about labor. That's what is happening with Kid 2 and college...I had forgotten about how tough it is to be right in the middle of finals and a week before Christmas and suddenly all of these decisions come flooding in and Defers and Rejecteds are floating around in the air and can knock even the most stable of kids off their feet. I felt really badly for my S last night...as he was getting texts (well snapchats) from buddies saying "into Harvard!" "Princeton" "MIT, MIT, MIT!" "Columbia!!!" he was deferred from Northeastern (a school that both he & I thought was a match). I don't know....i guess the schools are smart to do it right before the holiday break so kids can be with their families and get away from it all but it's still hard....grrrr...

"Little things" that mean a lot when choosing a college?

$

When our family visited colleges with our daughter, we realized that it was often the very small things that turned out to be a big deal when it came to deciding if she liked it or not. Even though we were all interested in the "bigger" things, most of those we had researched online before we even chose to visit a place, such as academic opportunities, or we could see when we were on the tour, such as the quality of the physical facilities and the beauty of the campus. So when we did visit, we started to realize the little things that jumped out at us, at first just by accident, but then later we started looking for those things intentionally. I'm curious to know what has been important to other prospective students and families. I think it would make for an interesting discussion, and be helpful as well! Here are the little things we look for: 1. Diversity. But by diversity, I don't just mean in the college as a whole. I graduated from a college that was pretty ethnically diverse, however, there was very little mixing between ethnic groups. In fact, it was common knowledge on campus that most of the black students lived in this dorm quad, most of the Asian students lived in that quad, etc. We look to see if small groups or pairs of students walking across campus or sitting in a common area are homogeneous or heterogeneous. It's very noticeable if you are on the lookout for it. The schools that seem to score highest in this for us were Vassar and Grinnell. 2. Social interactiveness. We like to see schools where common areas are buzzing with activity and conversation. It gives us a good feeling for the sense of connectedness students have to one another and to the school community. We visited some schools where it seemed like every student we saw was alone on their computer or walking across campus with earbuds in. You could walk through the largest common area in the student union and everybody still seemed to be by themselves. My daughter ruled out any school that was like this, so all of the schools on her list scored high in this area. Dickinson really stands out to us though, as it had the busiest and most active student center we saw anywhere. 3. Flyers: We always look at the flyers posted on poles and walls and bulletin boards. It's interesting to see how much there is going on on campus. we like to see lots of different kinds of club meetings, guest speakers, fun social events, performing arts productions, social and political activism, etc. My daughter got really excited over a flyer she saw at Vassar for a visit from Philippe Petit, the man who walked the high wire between the twin towers and on whom the movie "The Walk" was based. 4. Smiling! Seriously, how happy do the students look? I mean, I'm not looking for Stepford wife kind of smiling, but really if everybody looks miserable and stressed that doesn't leave a good feeling. The students at Macalester and Kenyon looked really happy! Nothing else is coming to mind at the moment, although I'm sure there's more. What about everybody else?

Deferred ED/EA and You Can Tell the College "Forget about it"?

I always assumed that if you are deferred ED/EA that your application was automatically put in the RD pool. From recent posts here on CC it appears that some colleges give the applicant the option to be considered for RD or to withdraw their application. Is this a common practice?

Does anyone have kids who did mediocre on the PSAT in 10th gr who then did much better on the SAT?

My child took the PSAT in 9th and didn't do so great. Just got this yr's scores (10th gr), and did much better, but not amazing. She is currently taking geometry. Next yr she'll have Alg II/ Trig. Anyway, I was wondering if she can do much better next yr after getting a lot of prep and taking more advanced classes and more AP classes. Have any of you personally seen much improvement by the time they are Juniors or can we assume that she won't be rocking the test even with tons of prep? PS-she did zero prep for this test

Juggling conflicting EC scheduling

How do people manage it? My daughter is only in 8th grade, so I'm looking for advice from you experienced high school parents for planning the coming years. I look on these "Chance Me" and other threads listing ECs and stats and I honestly don't see how it is humanly possible to juggle the EC scheduling of some of these kids (especially the Ivy-aspirants.) Even if a student has the smarts, talent, focus, efficiency, drive and ability to function on four hours of sleep per night (which mine doesn't, btw) , how do people make sure all the different rehearsal, practice, performance, competition dates don't collide especially when the pattern of dates seem to shift like a revolving, expanding galaxy? How do you keep all the teachers/coaches/leaders happy, or at least not exasperated, as you try to prioritize commitments? Where we live, at any rate, it seems it simply isn't possible to know all dates in advance. My daughter's top priorities for high school are marching band/concert band/jazz band but she is also (excitedly) thinking through the pros and cons of winter guard, tennis team, track team spring soccer and debate. She will be quitting/cutting back on 10 years of ballet ..(.last year she danced six days per week) because she wants to do primarily school-based activity, and the ballet classes at her level are 80 miles away over mountainous terrain. (She has worked herself out of a job, so to speak :) ) Already this fall we had a big conflict because the night of the school holiday band concert (mandatory) fell on the night of her ballet dress-rehearsal for which she had a leading role. Yikes! Neither of the dates were known when it was time to commit to the role. How, exactly is this done? I'm only asking because we have already experienced other such time conflicts in childhood when it didn't really matter and high school seems to ramp it up, by a LOT! (FYI, we are not going the EC route to try to get into tippy tops....really nice somewhat selective schools will do thank you very much! DD just wants to have fun, stay fit, and make the most of these years.) Advice? Stories? Hindsight? Thanks!
